2+ In The Giver Literary Techniques
Symbolism: when you use an object to represent an idea. Ex: in the movie Pocahontas the wind represents the spirt of her mother and peace.
Foreshadowing: is a hint about what is coming later in the story. Ex: in Cinderella the look of the evil step mother in the darkness hints to you that the evil step mother is going to do something to Cinderella.
Flashback: when a story is interrupted to go to something that happened in the past. It can be threw a dream; memory; or the character telling it. It adds information to the story. Ex: in the lion king Simba and scar is telling Simba that he killed you father. And Simba has a flashback seeing how his father died
Atmosphere: a character can feel a certain way but that isn't atmosphere. It is the way the setting feels. Ex: in Goofy movie his son goes away to college and when goofy goes back in the house and the house feel sad (the setting)
Plot twist: is when something unexpected happened but you have to have a hint before it happens (foreshadowing) Ex: in Bambi he is playing with her mom and something unexpected happens (Bambi’s mom is killed by a hunter)
Suspense: Build a feeling, ansiety. Ex: Harry Poter is about to get killed by voldemort.
Digressive Time: Goes forward and backwards (flashbacks and foreshadowing + book just going forward and backwards in chapters of book sections.
Progressive happens from present to future.
2.5+ In The Giver
Throughout the giver we realize it is an amazing book and that it is really calm. However
we can still see some good ''suspense'' moments one notorious example is when Jonas is selected for ''receiver of memories'' and this job has not been chosen in a long time.
The last receiver was a fail.
Another Example is when The giver mildly suggests that Jonas runs away giving the city or utopia all the things he has learned. This two example create great suspense in the giver novel by giving us small surprises, and these examples are noticed easily in a book that is calm and interesting like The Giver because we can see the contrast between the ''dramatic moments'' and the calm moments.
The giver is kind of a book in Digressive time because ''The Giver'' goes back into small flashbacks and gives them to Jonas. However the Giver is also progressive time because there is no flashbacks of foreshadowing that are happening in the book.
In the book the giver the atmosphere at the beginning is ideal, almost like a utopia. But when Jonas starts experimenting new things that are not in his community he realizes his community is over-protecting and suffocating. He then escapes into an atmosphere of contemplating tranquility and desperate need for survival in which he starts to starve.
Plot Twist+ Summary
What happens in the giver is that all the people are controlled and the main character Jonas eventually realizes what the government of the community is doing through the teachings of The Giver. He also realizes how much the comunity could have.H e falls in love with a little baby boy called Gabriel or Gabe they are planning to kill because of his slightly different weight and ends up getting soffocated of his society and escapes with Gabe so that the community will all of his memories when he dies and that he can go to a better place.

Commentating on my peers
Alejandro Samper
Alejandro Did an amazing job finding literary techniques examples and part
of it is because he picked a book with lots of literary techniques.
I really enjoyed the way he wrote down the literary devices and his small intro was really creative
and made the literary techniques look better.
Ana Maria Samper
I think you did an very good job in describing the literary techniques and relating them to your book. I think that you have more than sufficient evidence when explaining them. You also have a ton of examples posted which is very good. I really enjoyed reading the literary divices you posted in your blog from your novel.
Jack Ackerman
Jack discovered some amazing examples of literary techniques in his book and this is partly due to the fact
that he searched really well and picked a book with tons of literary techniques examples. Ending in a very
complete step 2.5 of the Novel project.

Plot Elements:
What are plot elements?
Plot elements are setting, character, plot, and resolution.
Setting, characters a bit of a small summary of the book.
The setting is Panem, (and in this book mostly disctrict 12, 13 and the capitol) Panem is a capitol (kind of the capital) sourrounded by 12 outlying districts. The capitol sends 2 kids from every district each year to compete to death in the annual Hunger Games. In these they compete to death. The winner gets rewarded by fame, glory and food for their district. Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old girl. She lives in district 12. She has a really good friend named Gale. When Katnisse's sister Prim is chosen to go to the games, she volenteers. When Katniss and Peeta Mellark (15 year old boy) Win the Hunger Games and defy the capitol, a revolution starts and Katniss soon becomes the icon of the revolution (Book 1, 2 and 3). The other characters are: Mom, Haymitch, Johanna, Plutarch, Finnick, Beetty, buttercup. The antagonists are: President Coin, President Snow, the capitol, the peacekeepers. Katniss fights through many different battles, some with situations, some actual battles and some with herself.
Plot and resolution: (book 2 and 3)
Katniss has to go to the hunger games once again and this time she was not supposed to stay alive. Finnick, Johanna and Haymitch organize an escape and they go live in district 13 in an underground base. Peeta gets lost in the jungle (inside the game arena) and the capitol captures him and tortures him. Katniss tries to lead the revolution as an icon and she brings motivation to other rebels. When finally the rebels take over the capitol Katniss is allowed to execute Snow and instead she executes President Coin which we are left in doubt if he was indeed planning all this. ex-president Snow dies of choking in his own barf and blood.
Step 3
Other People's Reading Project Feedback
Camila Toro: Camila does a very good job in giving character development in the story by J.K. rowling and includes a lot of the actual book in her explanation (a Pos and a Con). Having read the Prizoner of Azkaban myself I really liked Camila's review. Camila gives a very complete summary, expostion, review and explanation on character development through the book. 9.5/10
Alejandro Samper: Alejandro Samper gives us a well balanced very good review, summary, and exposition. He tells us step by step how Suzanne Collins (the author of my book too) develops her characters which i though was really nice. The elements of a story are very well described. The theme is precisely described and gives us a theme and a mood for the story. I read this story and Alejandro does a very good job giving us a sharp smart review, elements of character and mood, theme. 9.8/10
Juliana Laborde: Juliana gives a clear, descriptive plot and a very organized and well thought exposition. The setting is very detailed and she gives us a good detailed "walk-through" through the plot elements; rising action, climax, falling action and resolution, and you can tell that she read the book and put effort into it. She also gives connections which is an extra; however, she misses mood and theme but the amount of information and detail about the book and the extra connections do help to give it the score it deserves 9.5/10
Step 3.5 Creative Response
Katnisse's Diary Late September
My diary
Dear Diary,
Today we visited district twelve and it was devastating. We saw all houses completely destroyed but the twelve victor houses. I entered my victor house and found a white rose. President Snow I thought.
We returned to district 13 were I tried to convince myself that the rose was nothing but a mere hallucination, a simple day dream; I failed.
As the days passed the pressure to become the MockingJay grew bigger and bigger.
Today I become the MockingJay, my crew has designed my outfit; and scientists which name's I don't care for, have designed my bow. It has the option of explosive arrows and it is much better than any bow I've ever handled before.
Character development what is it? and how does it work? Improved
Character Development is how an author develops a character.
This is done very well according to the presentation shown to us by ms. shawntell and some few i have added:
1. Name, for a character the name has to be perfect it has to fit him and show his personality through?
2. looks, how does he look and what does he dress?
3. What are his talents?
4. What are his ambitions, intentions?
5. What is his deep dark secret that is going to change the novel. Does he even now about it?
6. His best friend?
7.Who is his worst enemy? is he the bad guy?
8. What does he carry in his pocket? what are his important belongings?
9. Who is he? what does he do?
!0. How can he relate to someone in the real world? Is he someones daughter someones cousin?
My personal Character in under 15 minutes:
Peeta Bloodscoundrel:
His looks:
a tall, smart, handsome, kid he has black eyes, short black hair, a small nose and small ears.
His talents:Good at sports, video games, martial arts, physical combat, parkour, math, and any mental activity.
His ambitions: Rule the MKS Primary for as long as he lives. His goal is to kill the principal.
His deep dark secret is he is not actually the teachers pet but he is a triple agent (pretends to be the schools double agent).
His best friend: Mathew Korctovic a russian kid spy. Mathew doesnt know he is a spy.
His worst enemy: Mr. Nickey the school spy
What he carries in his pocket: He carries a complex diagram, a cellphone, and a credit card which he is not old enough to have (he took it from his parents)
Recently lost items: he lost his spy laser pen given to him by Mathew. This pen was confiscated by Mr. Nickey\
Personality: Scoundrelish and suspicous, hes not part of the system and is very rebellious towards authority, His deep dark secret will cause trouble.
What makes the character feel known: He is similar to a rebellious 5 year old who still hasn't been taught by his parents how government and power works.
This story is a myth because it shows a story which show why something happened.
How I'm Going to develop my character: Im going to give a foreshadowing type prologue in which I Introduce Peeta, Mathew and rob slightly. Then I will go back to the beggening of the story in which i will introduce the rest of the friends: Ralph and Greg. The I will develop The principal alongside Peeta.
The Hunger Games Reading Improved
Main Idea:
The Book is about a Girl named Katniss that lives in Panem when her sister is chosen to the Hunger Games she volunteers and She decides to particpate in the Games. Katniss Survives The Hunger Games but makes a poor choice at the end. This choice might cause the destruction of Panem as they know it.
Exposition:
The book begins with Katniss Everdeen telling us about Panem, a country created in the ruins of North America... As we can deduce the book takes place in the future, she tells us about district 12, the dark times, The Hunger Games, and who are her friends and family. Almost Immediatly we get a description of Gale (Katnisse's friend) and how they met, and a description of her father, Mom and Prim. Soon we feel like we've known them for a while.
Rising Action
The Hunger Games Begin and 2 kids from every district (12 Dsitricts) are sent... when by a microscopic chance Prim (Katniss's Sister) is chosen Katniss Volunteers knowing only 1 out of the 24 tributes survive The Hunger Games. She makes a promise to Prim that she will stay alive. She and Peeta (the other tribute from district twelve Stay in a tower before the games and in the interview (pre-games) Peeta confesses his love for Katniss, making the audience wild. They go to the game masters to get theyre score 0-12 and Katniss surprisingly gets an 11. The Hunger Games Begin and around 12 people out of 24 die the first day. Cato Kills tresh and foxface dies from eating nightlock. Mutts chase Cato, Peeta and Katniss. When Cato isnt able to climb up the cornucopia fast enough Mutts atack him and he fights till the death.
Climax

When Caesar Flickerman Anounces Only one of them will be allowed to survive Peeta and Katniss decide to eat the nightlock as a rebellios act towards the games so they woulnt Have a winner Caeasar flickerman tells them to stop and immeadeatly the hovercraft picks them up.
Falling Action

Step 3 Book Review With 12 Words

This is an absolutely amazing and true accounting of
the 1914 Antarctic Expedition that went wrong. It is clear that the author did
an incredible amount of research, and though this book doesn't read like a
novel, its presentation is much more powerful this way, giving a panoramic outside
view of the whole desperaten appalling situation of
these men. I found this to be one of the most
fascinating stories of courage and hardship I have read. And it is all true. The
story is beautifully written. The Story is an excellent adventure tale with
strong characters, strong plot, excellent antagonist, and in a well developed
(very realistic) world.
Small Summary (SPOILER)
In 1914 Sir Ernest
Shackleton whimsical, brave, bold fellow, he leads twenty-seven men on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. In
December, 1914, the men aboard the Endurance. It later enters the pack ice of
the Weddell Sea off the coast of Antarctica. The Expeditions brings Dogs, most of them huskeys who stay in kennels.By January, 1915, The Endurance is
frozen immobile in pack ice that extends to all horizons. The Endurance drifts
with the pack ice for several months, eventually losing sight of land as the
typical Weddell Sea current spins the vast pack ice floe in a slow clockwise
direction making the boat squirm and eventually get trapped. The Endurance had been built to push through the pack ice,
but conditions proved too much and it was trapped in pack ice. Summer wore on
and there was no escape - the winds were in the wrong direction - then winter
hit and they were trapped in their boat. They settled in to a routine until the
ice went against them and cracked their Boat. Shackleton realized the only way
out was on their own, so they abandoned the boat and made for the pack ice at
first dragging the boats, then relying a floe to carry them north where they
might find more supplies, or be rescued. This Story of How they make it out of
there. In the end they had to rescue themselves and this is the story of their
indomitable courage and strength to survive under incredibly harsh conditions
and in grave discomfort.
The Story also proves nothing
is so bad that it can't get worse. The Story sometimes makes you feel apprehension. Other times you think that Shackleton is about
to win, but then there is a small disaster, or planet earth goes against them, making their efforts feel trivial, petty and futile more so everytime.- they are
constantly battling for their lives with decreasing odds of their survival, there are abounding problems throughout the whole story.
Even once they make it off the floe of ice and onto land they have to move
again to a safer landing place and then they must work out how to get help. No one reading this story would feel apathetic for these man. The nearest land is Chile some 500 miles away but it is almost impossible to
get to because of wind and current, so they must try to South Georgia, over 800
miles away and a tiny speck of an island 25 miles across and they only thing in
their way between Antarctica and South Africa. Hardly an easy thing find in an
open 22 foot boat. The men never succumb and they fight till the end.
(END OF SPOILER)
The Author tells this
story in a panoramic style and it really works. He had had access to most all
the diaries available from men who kept them on the trip.
The Author also brings to
light some of the things you wouldn't think about it - the incredible boredom
that they all felt, that they were generally alternatively wracked by either
gripping hunger or desperate need for survival and how to escape. It brings a
very alive and real picture of life as it must have been for the group.
This book would make a
great adventure book to introduce Antarctic exploration for younger children or
teenagers as it is so vivid and so exciting. This is one of the best books of
survival I have ever read and is highly recommended.
The Descriptions are Incrible with words like: Irrepresable, apathetic, and impetuous in each paragraph.
The Descriptions are Incrible with words like: Irrepresable, apathetic, and impetuous in each paragraph.
Anyway, an
absolutely incredible look at human endurance, at what a person will go through
if he must. Anyone would choose hard pain over death.
I definitely
recommend this book to everyone.

The Author also brings

boredom that they all felt, that they were generally alternatively wracked by
either gripping hunger or desperate need for survival and how to escape. It
brings a very alive and real picture of life as it must have been for the

The Vocabulary Words are challenging and you can tell they were selectively picked... Great Job!

Lorenzo I like your Rough Draft, It has very good facts,
It is well written, and it has a good summary of the story.
The only thing I noticed you could improve on is grammar and Spelling
even though I could only spot a mistake or two you still have to work
on that.
Edited Rough Draft
This book talks about
the life of one of the most influential presidents in the history of the United
States. It is “a photographic story of a life”, since there are many pictures
that complement the information given in the book. Tanya Lee Stone emphasizes the
story in his childhood, and his road to success, since it is extremely
impressive, taking into account his lack of formal education and opportunities.
She starts off talking
about the fascination the United States has for Lincoln. She mentions how her
memorial has a tall obelisk, bronze statues, plaques and flags. Lincoln comes
from a humble family, and his childhood was full of incommodities, like living
in ragged cabins built by the bear hands of his family. Even though Lincoln
spent most of his childhood working with his father, his parents understood the
importance of education, so whenever he had free time, he read and wrote. An
example of this is the fact that when he went off to work, he always stashed a
book, since he could read in his free time. Since he was a small kid he had a
penchant for poetry, since he excelled at it.
It was evident that
Lincoln had the brains and the brawn, since he was physically and mentally
gifted. Lincoln´s ax swinging talent had prompted his father to hire him to
work, and he even helped in building the Baptist Church in Pigeon Creek.
Abraham learned a lot from his father, since he would spend hours listening to
his sermons and raucous stories that entertained him amongst many other
townspeople.
Step 4 Final Draft
This is an absolutely
amazing and true accounting of the 1914 Antarctic Expedition that went wrong.
The author did an incredible amount of research, and though this book doesn't
read like a novel, its presentation is much more powerful this way, giving a
panoramic outside view of the whole
desperaten appalling situation of these men. I found this to be one of
the most fascinating stories of courage and hardship I have ever read. And it
is all true. The book is very well written. It is an excellent adventure tale
with strong characters, fantastic plot, excellent antagonist, and in a very
realistic world.

The play is written by William Shakespeare. Believed to be
written between 1590 and 1596. Portrays the events surrounding the marriage of
the Duke of Athens Theseus and the Amazon Queen Hippolyte. These include the
adventures of 4 Athenian lovers and 6 amateur actors manipulated by fairies in
the forest.

Theseus duke of Athens
Hippolyte: queen of the Amazons
Egeus: father of Hermia who wants his daughter to marry
Demetrius.

Helena: in love Demetrius
Lysander: in love with Hermia

Actors
This play is a comedy because it has a happy ending. The
theme in the play is love is complicated because the lovers always love someone
they shouldn’t.
Hamlet:
Hamlet is a tragedy bard on the Prince of Denmark. Set in
the Kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts on
his uncle Claudius for murdering King Hamlet. The play portrays true and
feigned madness. It goes from overwhelming grief to seething rage. The themes
in the play have something to do with treachery, revenge, incest, and moral
corruption. This is Shakespeare’s longest play and very popular during his
lifetime. Hamlet was Shakespeare’s most performed play.
Evaluating:

Night Dream [X]
Helena, the lovesick young woman desperately in love with
Demetrius, is perhaps the most fully drawn. First, Helena is the one who thinks
most about the nature of love which makes sense, given that at the beginning of
the play she is left out of the love triangle involving Lysander, Hermia, and
Demetrius. She says, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. She is
Utterly faithful to Demetrius despite her recognition of his shortcomings,
Helena sets out to win his love by telling him about the plan of Lysander and
Hermia to elope into the forest. Once Helena goes in the forest, many of her
traits are drawn out by the confusion that the love potion engenders: compared
to the other lovers, she is extremely unsure of herself, worrying about her
appearance and believing that Lysander is mocking her when he declares his love
for her.
In My opinion these elements make her the character with
most character development. The fact that her character development is mostly
mental she still in my opinion has more character development than other
characters in the story as she sees how love works and is somewhat confused in
a moment of the story but finally figures it out.

In total, he was credited for writing 154 sonnets (a specific style of poem) and 37 plays, which were divided into three categories: histories, comedies and tragedies. Histories were his plays written about the British monarchy. The comedies were plays with happy endings, while tragedies consisted of death and unhappy endings including many of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, such as “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet.” Despite the plays having female characters, all of the actors in plays at the time were men. William Shakespeare died in 1616, age 52, in Stratford upon Avon, from undetermined causes. He has been known as England’s national poet, and the “Bard of Avon,” and is said to be the greatest author who ever lived.

Shakespeare´s career started in the mid 1580´s when he wrote
his first plays, and ended around 1610, when he stopped writing. He was born in
1564 in Stradfors-upon-Avon, and when he started writing, he moved to London.
In my opinion, the best moment of Shakespeare´s career, was in the 1590´s
decade. By this time, he was already famous in all of London. He joined a
partnership and built his own theater, which made him very rich. He already
performed to the Queen. Now that he was loaded, he bought the second largest
mansion in all of Stradford. It was a period in which everyhting was good for
him: people liked him, had a wife and children, and lots of money, which
allowed more luxuries, therefore, having a more comfortable life.

Uglies Book Theme Analysis
By: Scott Westerfeld
Analysis by: Pedro Juan Mesa
The theme I chose for the book Uglies is: Overcoming obstacles in life.
Short Summary of the Book Uglies is a 2005 science fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld. It is set in a future world in which everyone is turned "Pretty" by intense cosmetic surgery when they get to the age 16. The book “Uglies” tells the story of teenager; Tally Youngblood who rebels against society's enforced conformity, after her new found friends Shay and David show Tally how being a "Pretty" can change the way you act and think.
Why did I choose this theme?
Originally I was going to pick the theme “Overcoming oppressors In life” however I started thinking and I realized we only see this theme after the first half of the book when we realize how oppressive and controlling the government actually is. Instead we see overcoming obstacles the whole book.
Examples and Explanation of theme
Here are some examples: having to live far away from her friends, having to betray a friend to get what she wants, having to choose between her life dream and friendship, having to realize that every single thing is not black or white, but gray. There are many examples of this theme throughout the book Uglies, The main character Tally is forced to overcome obstacles constantly not only to save her current persona but also to change and to evolve her own body, spirit, and mind.

The Theme I chose is: overcoming oppressors
The book Uglies is about a girl named Tally Youngblood that lives in what could be called a Utopia, where the people at age sixteen go into a surgery where they make them “pretties”. Tally Youngblood will rebel against this after her 2 friends show her what this surgeries are.
Examples: when because of shay Tally can not get the operation, when the spaceships come and destroy the smoke, when we realize that the only Way to stop the opressors is by falling in the oppression first (when she sacrifices to become pretty so they can use the antidote on her)
Examples from outside the book: Harry potter overcoming Voldemort, in the beauty and the beast the beast overcoming himself, in game of thrones Jon Snow overcoming the people that called him bastard.
Discussion (Some discussion will also be shown in step 4)
Me and my partner discuss and we come into the conclusion
that both themes are correct however mine is more complete
and therefore is the best theme.

Notes on Theme
Notes about Theme
Notes on how to find a theme:
Universal theme: Theme is the most important part, this is the primary purpose. Theme is the central idea of a work of literature. It is kind of the moral of the story, the message of the story. The theme is universal, not only characters. The theme is not same of subject, as subject is usually one word. The theme is the idea the writer tries to express about the subject, it must be an opinion. There is no right and wrong. The book is a model of the real world, the author wants you to see the world through their eyes. There is no wrong answer, if you can support that it is actually the theme. You can come up with a theme even though the author didn’t mean to teach that; the reader owns the meaning, not the author. A good way to find the theme is look at the main character, how he changes (good or bad). Also, look at the title for clues (sometimes, authors put hints about what is the theme in the title).
Common themes are:
Man vs super natural
Man vs himself.
Man vs society
Man vs Man
Overcoming adversity
Love conquers all
Death is a part of a life cycle
Sacrifices bring rewards
Examples of all Universal Themes
As we have been studying in class so far, we have learned all the Universal themes that come up in pieces of literature. Here, I will mention an example of each universal theme we’ve learned about.
Man vs himself: In the book Hunger Games Katniss not only fights against others but also matures as a person and takes responsibility for all Panem.
Man vs nature: The movie of Jaws, people fighting against shark.
Man vs society: One example is the movie fight club as he fights against society because of his mental disease which causes him to do things without being conscious.
Overcoming adversity: In the movie 300, when the little army of Spartans fight for their lives.
Love conquers all: In the movie Dear John, we can see how two individuals fight for their love.
Death is a part of a life cycle: In the movie Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore dies. Here we can see that even the least expected face this part of the life cycle.
Sacrifices bring rewards: As the Spartans soldiers in 300 sacrifice for their land, it gives soldiers from Sparta enough time to defend against the Persians.
What is and How to Find Theme
an opinion about a thing.
The message of the story.

Flash Backs
We can see lots of flashbacks in the book the giver as memories are transmitted to the giver by touch and we get the flashback told to us by The Giver or by Jonas.

You also have a ton of examples posted which is very good. I really enjoyed reading the literary divices you posted in your blog from your novel.

Jack discovered some amazing examples of literary techniques in his book and this is partly due to the fact
that he searched really well and picked a book with tons of literary techniques examples. Ending in a very

Step 3
